Day 21 of Prayer

Daily Scripture

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

Daily Devotional

The above scripture is a promise. There are many things in life that require the wisdom of God to discern: where to live and when, what school to go to or what job to seek, how to communicate with family or friends in a way that represents Christ, how to resolve conflict. Sometimes we need wisdom to decide between sin and righteousness and to determine God's will for our lives according to scripture. Other times we need wisdom to discern a trajectory for our life that pleases God, even when scripture doesn't explicitly state what to do.

The comfort we can find with the Bible's reference to wisdom is that God will give it to us when we ask him for it without doubting. The wisdom of God helps us to live through him and for him, and to please him in the way we conduct our lives. Further, he's already given us himself in the Holy Spirit, who helps us to be wise.

Wisdom helps us to approach each situation not only with caution, but also with confidence and spiritual understanding. We can read and learn and fill our head with knowledge all day, but without the wisdom of God, we won't learn how to utilize our knowledge to act and to speak in the most righteous way. With wisdom, we can learn to conduct ourselves in a Christlike manner, and we can learn how to best help others to conduct themselves in a way that pleases God.

Without wisdom, we can be fools, and we can say things we don't mean, do things we shouldn't have done, and make decisions we end up regretting. Without wisdom, we can taint the very name of Christ by the way we act and live.

Daily Challenge

Today, pray for wisdom. Each day, before each conversation, before each major decision, and before any transition in life (new school, job, location, etc.) pray for the wisdom of God to help you discern a way to approach each person and each situation with the understanding and insight of God.
